How to Play Poker

Poker is a card game where players compete for a pot of money. It is a very difficult game, but it can also be very fun.

To play, each player must put a small amount of money into the pot before cards are dealt. This is called the ante and can be as low as $1 or as high as $5.

After the antes have been put in, the dealer will deal two cards to each player. Then, each player will take a look at their cards and choose whether or not to bet.

When betting gets around to you, you have three choices: fold, call or raise.

The player who is to the left of the last person to bet may “call” that bet by putting in the same number of chips; or “raise” by putting in more than enough chips to call; or “drop” (“fold”), which means they put no chips into the pot and discard their hand.

Betting rounds occur in clockwise order, with each player to the left making a bet and all of the players to the right betting or folding until the end of the round. The highest hand that has not folded wins the pot.

Regardless of how much you win or lose, it is important to keep playing the game. This keeps you mentally strong and allows you to learn from the other players.
